The book of Job’s unique style, rhetoric, and theology make it one of the most challenging biblical texts to translate and interpret. In this course, we’ll explore Job in its ancient Near Eastern context, drawing insights from related texts, Hebrew grammar, and Semitic philology. As we track how the text subverts views of retributive justice that were common in its time, we’ll develop hermeneutical skills to apply its principles to our own.
